What Other Option Could I Have?
Tankless Water Heaters
Considered more energy efficient, tankless water heaters only heat water when it's needed. Once the faucet is turned on the water is then heated for a continual supply of hot water.
These systems also require less storage space and can hang adjacent to a wall. These units tend to have a lifespan of about 15 to 20 years and can reduce energy bills by almost 30% depending on usage.
Conventional Water Heaters
Conventional water heaters will keep water stored in a tank and they come in different sizes that can hold varying gallon capacities. Gas and Electric Water Heaters usually are meant to keep the water at a particular temperature until the faucets are turned on and water is then drawn through the pipes.
A standard conventional water heater should last for about 10-12 years. Newer water heaters of this type include energy efficient models that can lower energy bills by as much as 10% depending on the brand and usage.
Hybrid Water Heaters with Heat Pumps
A hybrid heat pump water heater uses a storage tank for water and a heat pump that takes heat from air to heat the water.
These are energy efficient models that can work in conjunction with pre-existing electrical and water connections thereby reducing heating costs by more than 50% depending on usage.
Solar Water Heating Systems
Solar water heating systems rely on the energy from the sun to heat hot water in the home. These methods can be active or passive with varying results depending on usage.
They can be less expensive but may not be as efficient, albeit they do tend to last longer. Utilizing controls and pumps, they circulate water and require a storage tank and back-up for high demand usage and days when the weather is cloudy.
